My Fusor Project
(Not my fusor)
Welcome back guys to another project me Halflife390/luca is doing!
As you all know by now I like doing physics and chemistry projects and blogging about them. I have made thermite, a laser, a tesla coil, HHO generators, started a nuclear breeder and many many more projects but I have only made a blog about the tesla coil - http://myteslaproject.blogspot.co.uk/
So my next project is to make whats called a fusor, a device that literly fuses atoms and ions together just like real reactors!
NOTE - DO NOT GET THIS PROJECT CONFUSSED WITH MY NUCLEAR PROJECT (http://mynuclearproject.blogspot.co.uk/)
THAT IS A TOTALY DIFFERENT PROJECT INVOLVING NO HV (High Voltage) BUT LOTS OF DIFERENT RADIOACTIVE MATERIALS. THE AIM OF THAT PROJECT WAS TO BREED NEW MATERIALS TOTALY DIFFERENT TO THIS PROJECT!!!
This project uses high voltages and a high power vacuum to fuse Ions that are in the air. There are two main types of fusors:
- Demo - Extremely basic, involves no radioactive material, uses the air alone as fuel, easy to make, more of a proof of concept then propper fusor, there will be very little fusion.
- Proper Fusor - Uses lots of VERY expensive equipment, uses deuterium (heavy hydrogen - D or 2H) as fuel, produces x rays and neutron radiation, uses a higher voltage than the demo fusor.
As its my first fusor it will only be the demo one. (This is like when I made my tesla coil, first I made a small proof of concept one before making the big proper one.) I will buy the parts off ebay and from shops around like B&Q. I will assemble and test the device with equipment i own.
How it works
The fusor works on a principle of inertial electrostatic confinement (IEC). The fusors proper name is a Farnsworth-Hirsch-Meeks Fusor. It works by creating a powerful vacuum in a transparent chamber. There are two spherical grids of metal in this chamber, one surrounding the other. A high voltage power source such as an NST is rectified using HV diodes into DC power. The negative DC power from the NST is connected to the inner grid, the positive DC is not used. The outer grid is tied to earth ground. The high voltage ionised the atoms in the air making positive ions. The positive ions are drawn to the negative inner grid and collide and fuse.
My setup:
- A powerful vacuum pump pulling almost all of the air out of a chamber.
- An NST (Neon Sign Transformer) providing a high voltage supply, diodes will be used to change the AC output to a DC output.
- The negative DC high voltage will be connected to the inner grid of the chamber.
- The outer grid of the chamber will be connected to ground.
- Once the vacuum is created and the power to the NST activated, the fusion reaction will start producing a bright purple glow. Awesome!
I have drawn up my design and I am currently finding parts. Il update this blog when I start to make it.
